I think the best way to illustrate the difference is to give you a portrayal of what a typical day is like in both places: TYPICAL DAY AT MIT (SPRING 2007) 9am 10am Hit the snooze button 5 times. Hit the snooze button one more time after deciding to skip breakfast for those 10 extra precious minutes of sleep. Get ready for class in record time. Still arrive late (had to grab some coffee). 10am 11am First lecture is thermo kinetics (5.60). Thiss actually a really interesting class (the lecturers are especially good Spring semester). Manage to stay awake because of content. 11am noon Next is biochem II (5.08). Its co-taught by the amazing Prof. Stubbe (who, in addition to being a brilliant scientist and an engaging lecturer, sprays dozing students with water from a squirt bottle, and has a dog named McEnzyme) and the amazing Prof. Ting (who is very hardcore, and also my previous UROP advisor). Noon 1pm Decide to skip molecular bio (7.28) recitation. Tempted by the prospect of lunch, but also decide to skip lunch to go to UROP (such dedication). Tom RajBhandary (a living, walking encyclopedia) and Dave Bartel (my current UROP advisor, whose lab I would definitely do my PhD in, if I were to come to MIT for grad school). Happy because I finally get to eat, and because its my favorite class. Its always sad to emerge from class to find that the suns already set, though. 6pm about 10pm Finish up things for the day at lab. On good days: get out by 8pm, on bad days: stay past midnight. Whenever lab ends midnight Head back to dorm. Eat dinner and shower (personal hygiene is really important! especially for whoever happens to sit behind you in lecture). Hang out/do some work with friends. Midnight 2am Work closing shift at front desk of dorm. People hardly come by during this time, so get to get some work done. Desk is such a great jobbasically getting paid to do homework! 2am about 4am Stay up to finish p-sets/essays/projects, if due next day. Sometimes stay up to grade p-sets for intro bio and intro physics (grading = another great way to make money). Its best to work in someone elses room, then you can keep each other company, keep each other awake, and commiserate (ah, what a common form of MIT bonding). Whenever work ends Yes! Can still sleep for X hours (+ extra 10 minutes if I skip breakfast tomorrow morning)! Now compare this to: TYPICAL DAY AT CAMBRIDGE (MICHAELMAS 2007) 8am 9am Spring awake and out of bed before the alarm goes off. Getting enough sleep makes for a happy morning. Get ready leisurely, eat breakfast while catching up on email/blogs/news. 9am 10am First lecture. Topic and lecturer changes every two days. If interesting_topic good_lecturer, then pay_attention(); else gossip_and_doodle(on_printout); (Okay, so Im not Course 6, but you get the picture). 10am 10:30am Tea break. Enjoy refreshing cuppa with other Biochemists in department tea room. Sometimes indulge in a buttered scone. 10:30am 11:30am Second lecture. Also the last lecture for the day! I know, amazing. 11:30am 12:30pm Grab lunch with friends. Usually at Pembroke Cafe (closest to the biochem dept, very tasty, and cheap). 12:30pm about 3pm Head over to lab. Usually stay anywhere between half hour to 4 hours at the longest. This is much less time than I was spending at UROP at MIT. Thiss because research in Cambridge feels a lot more relaxed, and also because I consciously made the decision to take it easy at lab this year. 3pm onwards Complete freedom for the rest of the day! Theoretically, and ideally, this should include studying, but we get assigned absolutely no work, so studying usually doesnt happen (I know, Im such a dedicated student). Also, if it happens to be Friday, and my bank balance isnt zero, and I feel particularly energetic, a weekend trip (e.g. to Stonehenge, London, France, Belgium, Germany, etc.) is probably in the works. The schedules pretty much speak for themselves. Theres a lot more freedom at Cambridge, and time feels like it passes slower. Nevertheless, I will add: Despite being much busier at MIT, I personally preferred the hustle and bustle of MIT to the idyllic peace at Cambridge. At MIT, there was more of a sense of personal accomplishment. I challenged my mind, I tried to contribute to scientific findings, I was ambitious, and I enjoyed the precious moments of free time I had. At Cambridge, I relaxed, slowed down, and enjoyed life. I floated down the River Cam in a punt on a sunny day, drinking Pimms and eating strawberries. Both lives are really nice, and I know the Cambridge life sounds way better. Honestly, the choice between staying up till 4am with a p-set and eating strawberries on the river seems pretty clear, right? Surprisingly, this year abroad has taught me that Im one of those annoying people who have to be busy to be happy. I feel happy knowing that Im working towards my goals through hard work, and I savour my free time. At Cambridge, I have so many swaths of free time that I didnt propery appreciate them. Outside the happy i ndulgent moments, I became bored, fell into a comas by ODing on YouTube, and then got unmotivated from the slow pace. Nevertheless, Cambridge is a wonderfully refreshing break from the hectic MIT. I mostly enjoyed my year here, but Ill be happy to be back, too.

The Growth of Government in the United States The U.S. government grew substantially beginning with President Franklin Roosevelts administration. In an attempt to end the unemployment and misery of the Great Depression, Roosevelts New Deal created many new federal programs and expanded many existing ones. The rise of the United States as the worlds major military power during and after World War II also fueled government growth. The growth of urban and suburban areas in the postwar period made expanded public services more feasible. Greater educational expectations led to significant government investment in schools and colleges. An enormous national push for scientific and technological advances spawned new agencies and substantial public investment in fields ranging from space exploration to health care in the 1960s. And the growing dependence of many Americans on medical and retirement programs that had not existed at the dawn of the 20th century swelled federal spending further. How Government Has Affected Employment While many Americans think that the federal government in Washington has ballooned out of hand, employment figures indicate that this has not been the case. There has been significant growth in government employment, but most of this has been at the state and local levels. From 1960 to 1990, the number of state and local government employees increased from 6.4 million to 15.2 million, while the number of civilian federal employees rose only slightly, from 2.4 million to 3 million. Cutbacks at the federal level saw the federal labor force drop to 2.7 million by 1998, but employment by state and local governments more than offset that decline, reaching almost 16 million in 1998. (The number of Americans in the military declined from almost 3.6 million in 1968, when the United States was embroiled in the war in Vietnam, to 1.4 million in 1998.) The Privatization of Services The rising costs of taxes to pay for expanded government services, as well as the general American distaste for big government and increasingly powerful public employee unions, led many policy-makers in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s to question whether government is the most efficient provider of needed services. A new word - privatization - was coined and quickly gained acceptance worldwide to describe the practice of turning certain government functions over to the private sector. In the United States, privatization has occurred primarily at the municipal and regional levels. Major U.S. cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Phoenix began to employ private companies or nonprofit organizations to perform a wide variety of activities previously performed by the municipalities themselves, ranging from streetlight repair to solid-waste disposal and from data processing to management of prisons. Some federal agencies, meanwhile, sought to operate more like private enterprises; the United States Postal Service, for instance, largely supports itself from its own revenues rather than relying on general tax dollars. Privatization of public services remains controversial, however. While advocates insist that it reduces costs and increases productivity, others argue the opposite, noting that private contractors need to make a profit and asserting that they are not necessarily being more productive. Public sector unions, not surprisingly, adamantly oppose most privatization proposals. They contend that private contractors in some cases have submitted very low bids in order to win contracts, but later raised prices substantially. Advocates counter that privatization can be effective if it introduces competition. Sometimes the spur of threatened privatization may even encourage local government workers to become more efficient. CHANNEL PARTICIPANTS AND CHANNEL STRUCTURE OF NESCAFE Channel Partners There are various channel partners involved in the distribution of Nescafe. Nestle has 8 factories in India. From these factories, Nescafe coffee passes on through several channel partners: DC (Distribution Centers): Nestlà ©s distribution centers are specialized buildings, with refrigeration and air conditioning where many Nestle products along with Nescafe are stored for distribution other channel members. It is one of the most basic parts of the order processing and fulfillment process. It can be said that these distribution centers are company owned warehouse. It is important to note that distribution centers can be of many types such: Retail Distribution Center- distributes goods to retail store Order Fulfillment Center distributes goods directly to consumers Cross-Dock facility doesnt not stock the products but distributes to other destinations Super Stockiest The Company keeps their stock with super stockiest to pass it on next channel members like wholesalers, retailers and consumers. Usually there is a separate super stockiest for every district. Wholesalers: They buy in bulk. The company usually provides them discounts on the bulk purchases. Wholesalers help the company break the bulk quantities by further selling the product to retailers in small quantities. Retailers: Retailers sell the coffee directly to consumers through retail shops. These retail shops can be traditional Kirana stores (also known as General Trade) or Supermarkets and Hypermarkets ( known as Modern Trade). E.g. Spar Hypermarket. Here it is important to note that because of the bulk purchases done by hypermarkets, the company may sell its product directly to such channel member engaged in modern trade, thereby reducing number of level of channel distribution and costs. NESTLE primarily uses two types of product channel distribution structures in order to deliver the NESCAFE COFFEE products from manufacturer to consumers. In the structure A, we can see that from the factories, the product does to the distribution center (DC) where it is stocked for further distribution. From DC to product moves to super stockiest, who further supply it to wholesalers? From wholesalers the product moves to retailers. In structure A, these are traditional retailers having Kirana or traditional stores. Such structure is more successful in unorganized market. Nescafe coffee is then sold to end consumers through such stores, where it is put to display. In structure B, the coffee moves directly to retailers from distribution centers. From retailers the product is then sold to consumers. This structure is more successful in modern trade where retailers sell the products through supermarkets and hypermarkets in an organized retail market. Eg. Big Bazaar, Spar Hypermarket, Reliance Fresh etc. Packaging Nestles Nescafe Coffee is packaged in sealed airtight containers made out of glass/plastic and even in sealed bags of varying size and quantities which are further enclosed in cardboard boxes. However glass is the preferred choice of packaging material as according to Nestle, it is a natural material composed mainly of sand. To make their packages aesthetically appealing, the company prefers glass as any shape and size can be give to it. “Let me not to the marriage of true minds” Essay

†Let me not to the marriage of true minds† by William Shakespeare is an Elizabethan sonnet of 14 lines divided in three Quatrains and the habitual rhyming couplet. In this particular poem Shakespeare uses a complete different approach, luring the reader by achieving a dramatic change of style. Although keeping the simple A/B/A/B/C/D/C/D/E/F/E/F/G/G rhyming scheme, providing the sonnet with an harmonious, fluid sound and giving it the pleasant impression of a light-hearted song †Let me not to the marriage of true minds† does not fulfill all the typical criteria’s Shakespearian sonnet, the subject evoked being without comparison to his previous pieces. Shakespeare deliberately takes an idealistic turn, praising love in it’s purest form, where it is not only a simple feeling, but a synergy of the souls, where obstacles seem meaningless on the road of happiness, where no Impediments can be admitted in the †marriage of true minds†. This great respect for love is already announced by the poet in the very title, as he preaches that he shall not come in between of love †Let me not to the marriage of true minds† nor accept any impediments to destroy this permanent bond. †Love is not love which alters when alliteration finds {†¦. } or bends with the remover to remove†¦ † Here the author makes a strong statement, claiming that true love is strong, constant and can be in no way alliterated by adversity or the hands of time. If altered or shaken by a †remover†, proven impermanent by time as it was not apt to endure the arising obstacles in its path, this love is thus not comparable to the †true love† the author makes allusion to, †love is not love†. True love is indeed an †ever-fixed mark†, an unfailing variable ‘that looks on tempest and is never shaken; It is the star to every wand’ring bark†. The poet seems to personalize this notion of true love, by comparing it to a trusty lighthouse spreading light and hope to every †wand’ring bark† helping them find their path, unshaken by the tempest raging at its door. It is the star rising well above the ground, shining of all her glory and dominating the †wand’ring† bark. Here the †bark† is used as a metaphor, for the lovers navigating trough struggles, wandering but finding their way, finding their path guided by the light of true love. † Whose worth unknown although the height may be taken† as William Shakespeare so elegantly puts it, love can be measured or quantified to some degree, but it would be irrational to claim we can understand or comprehend the nature of true love as it’s worth is †unknown†. † Love’s not Time’s fool, through rosy lips and cheeks {†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦.. } but it bears it out even to the edge of doom† Shakespeare is here demonstrating the for ever occurring rivalry between Love and Time. This rivalry is here accentuated by the important capitalization of the word †Time† associated with the word fool turning in derision love makes it obvious for the reader that it was attributed more than just a minor role in the poem. This capitalization contrasts with the word love, and time could be here well interpreted as the enemy or the principal obstacle in the path of true love. Time, grasping its sickle tightly between its long and pallid fingers walks the earth draining life out of the dying and youth out of the beautiful †rosy lips, and cheeks†¦ †. We can here note the allusion to the word †sickle†. The sickle, often co notated with the †walking death† or †Grim reaper† is here used as a comparison to the †great plague† by the author to reinforce the dramatic effects of time and it’s threat to lovers, stealing their youth, reaping all beauty from the eyes of the beholder and harvesting life. We can also note the use of the alliteration in †within his bending sickle’s compass come† , providing a sound a harsh cutting sound and bringing to reality the already vivid image of the sickle. †Love is not Time’s fool† and shall not be ridiculed in such way. The author brings to life the two terms by the mean of personification, accentuating the feeling of rivalry and opposition between the former and the latter, as true love can not be turned into derision or treated with condescension by the scornful time . True love will never alter or kowtow in front of †brief hours and weeks but bears it to the edge of doom†. By this verse the author supports the claim that true love is eternal and shall not suffer the damages of time and remain as powerful as when the beacon was first lit, carrying this abstract notion to the edge of death †but bears it out even to the edge of doom†. †If this be error and upon me proved/ I never writ, Nor no man ever loved†. Shakespeare concludes in his rhyming couplet (slant rhymes) that if, what he claims to be true is proven wrong, he has never †writ† or written and no man as ever loved. This conclusion can seem to be based on an illogical argument as we are all well aware that Mr. Shakespeare is an author and has thus †Writ† in multiple occasions as we are also forced to accept the obviousness that man as loved. By confirming these statements as obviously truthful we are also accepting them as the †evidences† confirming his claims, and are thus imposed by the conclusion to agree within these terms.
